Preventive Health Month

It’s that time of year again-the holiday season. A time to celebrate and enjoy time with family and friends. Many times our health and fitness goals seem to take a back seat to all the festive activities.
It is important to keep on track during this busy season. The following are tips to help guide you through your holiday adventure:
  • Don’t let your exercise program fall victim to the holiday time crunch.
You may just have to readjust your focus. This can be accomplished by shortening your workout sessions or including your family in fun fitness activities such as decorating, strolling the neighborhood to see the lights or walking the mall while shopping.
  • If you’re traveling, look for a hotel that has fitness facilities.
Try to find a local gym that has daily rates and at least get one day of exercise in while visiting. If you’re staying with family, ask them about safe walking route around their area.
  • By keeping some form of exercise in your routine, you can help reduce some stress.
  • The holidays seem to be a free for all in the eating area.
It is important not to let overeating become a yearly occurrence. Keep focus by reminding your self that moderation is the key-NOT deprivation.
  • Try not to expect to loose weight, this may be too frustrating. Set your goal to maintain your weight.
  • If your heading out to parties, try to eat a healthy snack right before you leave. You will be less hungry and you will be less likely to overeat.
  • If you are having a party, make low fat alternatives to the holiday favorites. Always include healthy choices like a vegetable tray with low fat yogurt dip and fresh fruit.
  • Use the small plates at the buffet. You can’t put as much on these and are less likely to keep refilling it.
  • Watch the quick tastings while cooking.
Did you know that one finger full of cookie dough is equal to 80 calories. WOW that can really add up!!!
  • Drinks containing alcohol can add calories surprisingly fast!! Alternate between these drinks with low calorie soda, water or fruit juice.
  • Stress can be overwhelming this time of year also.
Don’t let it overtake you. Remember to keep your focus-Holidays are for family, friend and the ones you love.
  • Don’t wait to the last minute to do every thing.
Try to plan out the extra tasks like shopping, wrapping, baking and card writing. Set realistic goals; try to do a little each day.
  • If you find yourself alone; pamper yourself.
Do something just to make you feel good. Volunteer your time, helping others can do wonders for your temperament.
  • If all else fails, close your eyes, take a deep breath and count to ten. This can help you regain your focus.

Remember keep your perspective on why you are celebrating!!

Have a safe and joyous Holiday Season and get ready for a healthy New Year!!!!!!
