Say NO to Stress!!

Happy April!

Spring is finally here. The sun is shining and the birds are chirping. Can it be that you still have some stress in your life?

Deadlines at work, your kids baseball games or dance recital, maybe it is the stress of finishing you taxes that has caused you to miss the wonder of the season? SilverSpringCenter.com has some information on understanding stress and some tips on how to deal with it.

What is stress? We throw that word around a lot but what does it mean exactly.

Stress is any physical or mental response made on an individual.

Wow that covers just about everything. Let’s look at it this way-stress can be positive or negative. Our bodies have the same response whether the stress we are feeling is encouraging or destructive.

For instance, the excitement you feel before a big game or when you are going to make your stage debut or before a big date is positive stress. Your heart beats a little faster, your palms are sweaty, your breathing is a little faster and your temperature increases: these are all positive body responses. Most importantly they are temporary reactions to the stress and our bodies relax shortly after the stress passes. It’s the stress you encounter when you are late for meeting or working, on overload, or trying to balance family and work duties, or when dealing with life changes that can lead to negative reactions or behaviors.

With negative stress, your heart rate stays high, more that likely you blood pressure goes up (it may stay high), your breathing is more erratic and it is much harder to calm down. Over time, these elevated body responses can lead to very serious health problems. Hence, society’s version of stress as bad. Since it is next to impossible to totally eliminate stress from our lives, we must find constructive ways to deal with stress.

Here are some tips….

  • Identify what is causing your stress. The first step to changing the problem is pin pointing the exact cause or causes of you stress. Take a look at all aspects of your life.
  • Write it down. This can work in so many ways. Whether is it be listing out what is causing your stress or writing down a plan of action for your day, just the act of writing can help relieve stress
  • Do it now. Procrastination can be very stressful. Remember the old saying-"Don’t put off to tomorrow what you can do today". Get the idea!!
  • Have an outlet. Do something that will help you alleviate stress. Try exercise, or pick up hobby, meditate, aromatherapy, get a massage or give a massage or plan a vacation-even if it is a one day getaway!!!
  • Plan Ahead. Having plan can really help. Having your clothes picked out the night before can be a time saver in the morning. Plan to fill up the gas tank whenever it hits a quarter of a tank-no more last minute fill ups when time it short. Plan out household or work tasks. This helps to limit surprises.
  • Take a deep Breath!! When all else fails-BREATH. You can do this anywhere, anytime, anyhow. The act of taking a deep breath not only allows for more oxygen to get into your system, it also triggers your body to start the relaxation process. A welcome thing in stressful situations. Try this-take a deep breath in slowly with your nose (as much air as you can) hold it for a count of 3-8 seconds-now breath it out of your mouth. Push the air out gently, as much as you can. Do this 5-10 times. As you practice this, try to hold the your breath additional seconds.
These are just some ideas to help deal with negative stress. Remember-one step at a time! Start today. Stress can be dealt with positively, it’s up to YOU!
